Bag of Beads Activity

Here is another activity that will help you think about how the inside of the lungs might look.

Your teacher will give each group a balloon filled with small clear beads.

Think back on the activity you just completed on surface area. Now think about the activity where you placed the cubes in different ways inside the lung drawing.

Inspect the balloon filled with beads. Is the balloon hollow? Is it empty?

Does this suggest a way the inside of the lung might look to you. Think of the beads like the small cubes. Now compare this to the two models on the opposite page (the cul-de-sac model and the broccoli model).

Draw a group model of the inside structure of the lungs on your whiteboard to share with the class.

Share your ideas with the class. How are the models the same? How are they different?

Can you think of another analogy for your model?

Think about all the models of the inside of the lungs you have constructed, heard about, and seen. In the space below draw the one that seems most likely to you. Be sure to label your drawing and use arrows to show the direction of air flow.

Discuss all your group's drawings. Challenge each other to support the model you have chosen or suggest another model. Then share with the class.

Has your model changed? Make any changes on your drawing to reflect your new ideas.
