Activity

Clay Ball

Your teacher will provide a ball of clay for your group and a toothpick for each group member. Your job is to determine what is inside the ball of clay using only the toothpicks. You can only probe straight down into the clay. You cannot break open or squash the clay ball. You will have 10 minutes for this activity.

Materials
  • clay balls (one for each student)
  • toothpicks

Using the toothpicks to probe, try to determine what is inside your ball of clay.

Discuss your ideas as you proceed to work together as a team.

Are there ways you can work together to find out what is in the clay ball?

Do you think it would be easier to get the answer working by yourself or with a group? Why?

When you have some ideas, draw and/or write your prediction in your lab book.

What are some other examples in science that cannot be seen? How does science represent or explain these?

Often in science, scientists want to explain a phenomenon that cannot be seen. They then must use models and instruments to help them make new discoveries. You did something similar when you attempted to discover what is inside the clay without actually seeing it.
