Criticize and Revise

Now your teacher will show you a transparency or an animation of blood vessels. Pay close attention to the following things:

  • Which blood vessels lead away from the heart?
  • Which blood vessels lead back to the heart?
  • How are the arteries different in structure from the veins?
  • What do you notice different about the way the artist has depicted the arteries and veins and capillaries?
  • In the veins blood is going against gravity as it returns to the heart. How is this possible?

Do you have any new ideas about arteries, capillaries, and veins? Were there any surprises?

Now take time to redraw your original drawing using your new understanding. Draw and name the blood vessels, showing what they basically look like and how they are arranged in relation to the heart. Be sure to label all your pictures.
