Ear of Corn Analogy |
Sometimes it helps us see patterns in objects that we are not used to if we look at something similar first. For this reason, you are now going to observe a dried ear of corn to see if you can pick out any characteristics and patterns. |

Your teacher will give an ear of corn to each group. In your group do the following: |

1. Inspect the corn and describe the pattern of the kernels. Do not be concerned about the hardness or color of the corn. You will be asked to share your answers with the whole class. |
|
2. Make a quick drawing of the ear of corn and write down three descriptions about the pattern of the kernels. |
|
3. Draw a thin, microscopic slice of what your body would look like if the cells were arranged the same way the kernels in the ear of corn are arranged. |
|
|
Now share what your group noticed about the corn with the rest of the class. |
|
In your class discussion try to connect the corn analogy to how the small units that make up the body (cells) may be configured, that is, how they are laid out in the body. |
|
As other groups share their answers, ask yourself whether you agree or disagree with what they are saying. Can you ask them a question that makes them defend their answer? |
|
Make a quick drawing in your lab book of how your idea now about how cells in the body are laid out. |
