| Timelines | There are three suggested timelines for this curriculum. The 12 week timeline allows the teacher the most flexibility in including Extensions, Application Problems, and Projects. For the best effects we recommend attempting to include as many of these as possible. This allows students time to 'try out' the mental models they have constructed in real life situations. In addition, the longer timeline allows the teacher to integrate other units of study into Energy in the Human Body such as connections to the environment, an expanded study of energy, and photosynthesis. However, we recognize that often there are factors that limit the time that can be devoted to any one particular curricular unit. Schools also have different length of classes or classes that only meet three or four times a week. For this reason, we have included two alternative timelines, one for 6 weeks and one for nine weeks. These are suggested timelines and you may find that you need to spend more or less time on any one chapter. It is important to remember, however, that the activities listed on the critical path should be followed closely and avoid spending too long on a chapter that results in cutting another chapter short. Only after you are sure students have achieved the target concepts should you introduce other activities. This does not mean the other activities are not important. Sometimes it is more expedient to give these extension activities to students as homework or outside projects. | |
