Investigation 2.2

Does This Mean We're Breaking Up?

Carbohydrates (starches) are large molecules made up of glucose molecules. In order for your body to use the glucose in carbohydrates, it needs to break it down into small units.

Come up with a mechanism to obtain glucose that is a smaller molecule from carbohydrates that are larger molecules.

Now discuss your ideas with your group. Think back to the apple.

1. What happens when you first put the apple in your mouth, could you just swallow the whole piece?

2. How might this be similar to what happens to break down the carbohydrate into sugar or glucose?
