Investigation 2.6

Where Do I Go From Here?

Now that the mouth has begun the process of digestion, what happen when we swallow the food? Where does it go?

When we swallow the food what happens to the air we are breathing? Do we continue to breath as we swallow?

Try this: take a deep breath and notice the sensations in your throat. Now swallow. What is happening. What do you feel? Are you breathing and swallowing at the same time? What sensations tell you what is happening?

With your group try to come up with a mechanism to explain what is happening.

To help you think of an explanation it might help to also try to think about why people choke. See if your group can come up with an explanation.

Draw an illustration of what your group has decided on your whiteboard and share it with the rest of the class.

Some people say that the lungs and stomach are connected. What happen when you drink something with a lot of bubbles inside such as a soft drink? What do you feel inside?

Is this the same as the air we breathe?

Sometimes students can make themselves burp even without drinking something bubbly like a soft drink. How are they doing this?

I wonder if there is air in the stomach all the time? What would happen if we had air we breathe in the stomach all the time?

What does this suggest about the tube that goes from the throat? Draw and label the model you have now.

CRITICIZE AND REVISE

Your teacher will show you one artist's idea through a computer animation of how the food and the air go through the throat.

As you watch the animation pay close attention and see if there is anything in your model that is different from what the artist has drawn.

Do you agree or disagree with what is shown in the animation? What questions do you have about the animation?

Talk to your partner and take turns trying to describe what you saw in the animation.

TOGETHER ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS:

How many tubes does your model have from the throat?

What happens in the throat when food is swallowed?

What happens to our breathing when we swallow?

Does food and air go in the same direction?

Do we have the air we breathe in our stomach?

Compare your ideas from the very beginning of this investigation to your ideas now. Make your changes in the drawing below. Be sure to label all your drawings so that you can refer to them later.
