Investigation 3.0

Introduction

To recall the models you have developed so far about digestion and energy, look back at the notes and drawings. Remember you have previously said that the human body needs energy for all of its functions.

We have learned that:
  • the body needs energy for all of its functions
  • we get out energy from food which is broken down into the digestive system

So now we can ask:
  • How does the body get energy from the food?

In order to answer this question, we will first explore where the energy transfer process takes place. To do this we must first investigate the smallest units of the body - the building blocks, the cells.

Can you imagine where the exact place inside the body is where the energy is being transformed and used? Describe it.

If you could look at some of the smallest pieces of tissue that up make up your body, what do you think they would be or look like?

What is the body made of?

After you have thought about these questions, discuss them with your group. Do others have differing ideas? What might this be? Can you defend your own idea? Are there other things about their model that you think is interesting or possible?
