Investigation 3.1

What are the Patterns of Life?

Look at the drawing of the girl in your lab book.

In the drawing there are three circles. Imagine that you could take a very thin slice of tissue, thinner than paper from the skin, the heart, and the muscle. Slices so thin that you would need a microscope to see them.

If you could look at these tissues very closely under a strong microscope, what do you think they would look like? Label your drawings.

It is often hard to imagine the small units that make up our bodies and even though you may know that they are called cells, what we actually see with our eyes are massive groups of these cells making up tissues and organs.

In the following activities we will use some strategies to help up get better mental models of these tiny units.
