Investigation 4.2

Do We Have Anything in Common?

Now that you have looked at possible similarities and differences in cells of the human body, let's look more closely at those things they have in common.

Until now we have been looking and talking about groups of cells that make up tissues in the body. Let's zoom in on a single one of these cells.

Draw your idea of a single cell and label it. Try to make this a generic type of cell that acts as a model. That is, it does not have to look exactly like a muscle cell or a nerve cell but rather a simple drawing that depicts your idea of what most cells are like and what they might contain.

Share your drawing of the cell with your group. Do your pictures look different?

Discuss this with your group.

Now think of what your generic cell might do. What is its function? Go back to your drawing on the previous page and draw any additional structures in the generic cell that might be necessary for these functions.
