Investigation 5.1

Why Do Cells Need Energy?

1. Do you think some cells need more energy than others?

2. Which type of cell is more active, a cell in your brain that does your thinking or a cell that stores fat in your body?

3. Which do you think needs more energy?

Talk with your group about your answer and then come up with a list of functions that different cells might perform that would require energy.

Write them on your whiteboards.

Now share your ideas with the rest of the class. Defend your answer if necessary.

Do other students have ideas that you find interesting or possible?

Look back at your model of energy and all your ideas about the cell. What new ideas do you now have?

Draw in your lab book where you think energy is transferred from the food to a usable form.
