Investigation 6.0

Introduction

You have previously studied the cell and its need for oxygen and sugar to transform energy into ATP for the cell. Carbon dioxide and water are products of the process in which we put food energy into a form we can use. This process, called cellular respiration, happens in the mitochondria of body cells.

Look back at your prior drawings and notes to refresh your memory.

Think of some ideas about how oxygen and glucose get to the cells throughout your body, even as far away as your toe.

If carbon dioxide is produced in the cells, how does it get from the cell to be disposed of?

Can it just build up and up in the cell?

On the drawing of a girl in your lab book, show the path followed by oxygen and sugar to the big toe.

Show how the carbon dioxide gets out of the big toe. Be as detailed as possible.

Label your drawing.
