Investigation 7.1

Where, O' Where is the Air?

Remember when we learned about the digestive system? Did we discover that the air and food both went down the same tube?

In your lab book is a drawing similar to the one you drew the digestive system on. See if you can make a detailed drawing on the ones in your lab book of the air going from the mouth and nose into the body. What path does it take?

Remember our discussion about choking? Does this help you identify where the air and food go?

Share your drawing with your group.

How many people in your group have one tube?

How many have two?

Try to come up with a group model that you can share with the rest of the class. Be sure that everyone in your group can defend and explain your group model.

Now share with the class as your teacher directs. Your teacher will ask you specific questions such as those listed below to help you clarify your model.

If we only had one tube carrying food and air, wouldn't a lot of air go into the stomach? What effect would this have on how much food we could eat?
