Investigation 7.2

The Structure and Function of the Lungs

Now that you have established a model for air moving into the body through the trachea, let's look at the next stop for the air. Most students have put something in their initial drawings that they call lungs. In the circles in your lab book draw your model of lungs looking at the inside and the outside. Label your drawings. You might want to use colored pencils to better depict the lungs' internal structure.

Share your drawings with your group. Discuss what everyone has drawn. Are your models different? Try to explain your model to the group. Challenge each others' models by asking questions.

Now look at your model and those of the other students in your group and answer these questions.

  1. Where is the air in your model?
  2. What is happening in your model when you breath in and out?
  3. Where is the air going? What does it do once it is inside your lungs?

Ask each other," How can that work? "

Share your group's model with the rest of the class. Modify your own model as needed during and after these discussions.
